Tips for Success:
- Flavor Profile: This delicious Vegan Peanut Butter Mousse with Chocolate Shell Topping or simply a sprinkling of vegan chocolate chips is the Whole Food Plant Based version of the viral TikTok Peanut Butter Mousse. Filled with wholesome ingredients, this treat is especially for those peanut butter chocolate combo lovers.
- Texture: The texture is more pudding/cheesecake-like rather than a mousse which is more light and fluffy.
- Sweetness/Taste: The beauty of this recipe is that you can taste the end product to determine the level of sweetness based on personal preference. We made this recipe intentionally sweet. However, if you are concerned, start on the low side of maple syrup, then after mixing all the ingredients, taste it. It should taste sweet. If not sweet enough for your taste, then simply add more maple syrup.
- Vegan Cream Cheese: We used Kite Hill Cream Cheese simply for convenience. It is Whole Food Plant Based. We also have a Vegan Cream Cheese recipe if you would like to make vegan cream cheese from scratch.
- Optional Chocolate Shell: We melted vegan chocolate chips which creates a “magic shell” type of topping. In other words, the melted chocolate hardens in the refrigerator, and you need to crack it with your spoon to eat it. The effect is similar to an ice cream bar with its hard chocolate shell exterior.
- Thickness of the Chocolate Shell: Keep in mind, the thicker the magic shell layer, the more challenging it will be to crack open. For photography purposes, we made a thicker chocolate magic shell layer.
- Easiest Way to Make: Simply sprinkle chocolate chips on top rather than creating a magic shell layer.
- Glass Jar Containers: We used small glass jars; you can use any small containers you wish with this recipe.
- Table Salt: If using table salt, you should use less table salt than the amount listed in the ingredients as sea salt crystals are larger than table salt crystals. Since table salt crystals are very fine, less table salt is required to season a dish. We would suggest starting with about 1/4 to 1/2 the amount of sea salt listed. You can always add more salt but cannot take it away. We recommend using sea salt as it is less refined than table salt.
Leftovers and Freezing:
Leftovers will generally keep 5 days in the refrigerator. Store in a covered container.
These treats cannot be frozen.
Pantry Products:
- Vegan Chocolate Chips: We used Enjoy Life Dark Chocolate Chips. You can use your favorite dark or semi-sweet vegan chocolate.
- Kite Hill Cream Cheese: We used Kite Hill Cream Cheese. It is Whole Food Plant Based. Feel free to use your favorite store-bought cream cheese or make your own.
- Sea Salt: Please adjust the sea salt based upon your family’s sea salt preferences and/or based upon dietary needs.
Kitchen Equipment:
- Glass jars (we used Weck Mini Tulip Jelly Jars #762)

Ingredients
Base Ingredients:
- 1 cup natural peanut butter
- ½ cup + 1 Tablespoon unsweetened plain plant yogurt
- ¼ cup vegan cream cheese (+/-) *
- 3 to 6 Tablespoons pure maple syrup (+/-) *
- 1/8 teaspoon sea salt (+/-) *
Optional Topping Ingredients:
- ¼ to ½ cup vegan chocolate chips *
- Sprinkle chopped peanuts
Instructions
- Place all the Base Ingredients into a bowl, mix vigorously until the mixture is smooth and emulsified. Taste test, adjust ingredients, if needed.
- Place the mousse mixture into 4 glass jars (or one large glass bowl) and refrigerate.
- Determine if sprinkling with chocolate chips or creating a chocolate magic shell.
- Magic Shell: Place the vegan chocolate chips (or chocolate) into a glass bowl. Place into the microwave and microwave for 15 seconds, then stir. Place back into the microwave and microwave for 10 seconds, stir and repeat until all the chocolate has been completely melted. Once the chocolate has melted, pour the melted chocolate over top of the mousse mixture.
- Sprinkle Chocolate Chips: Sprinkle a layer of chocolate chips over top of the mousse.
- Sprinkle with chopped peanuts. Repeat for the remaining mousse containers. Cover the individual containers and refrigerate for one hour or overnight, then serve and enjoy.
