Hi there, Ameera here!
Split Pea “Dumpling” Soup is an old-fashioned Amish soup that my grandma used to make except we made it with gnocchi instead of dumplings. The gnocchi works perfectly with this tasty soup! It’s savory, hearty, and filling enough to serve as a main dish with a crusty slice of bread.
The split peas cook down and “melt” creating this thick and savory broth that tastes like it’s been cooking all day.
Tips for Success:
- Instant Pot: We used an 8-quart Instant Pot. If you use a 6-quart Instant Pot, you may need to reduce the time in the Instant Pot accordingly.
- Flavors to Marry: Make sure you allow at least 5 minutes for the flavors to marry. The flavors continue to develop once the soup slightly cools.
- Instant Pot Sauté: We sautéed the veggies with the Instant Pot using the Sauté feature, and it really made no discernable difference in the end result. It did make a very slight difference on the stove top, but not worth the extra effort when using the Instant Pot.
- Fresh, Frozen, Canned Peas: We tried using frozen peas in this dish (at the end) and we were not happy with the crunchiness. We landed on using a can of peas added at the end which worked fabulously.
- Gnocchi: Gnocchi are really just potato dumplings. We loved using them in this recipe. We tried both regular sized gnocchi and baby gnocchi. Ultimately, we loved the baby gnocchi; however, both will work equally well. The baby gnocchi size seemed more harmonious with the soup. Note: Can’t find a compliant gnocchi, you can always make your own gnocchi or dumplings, or you can leave them out of this recipe. The soup is also great without the gnocchi. We did try it without gnocchi and served it with some steamed rice in the soup. It was awesome!
- Timing of Gnocchi: For best results, time the cooking of the gnocchi to align with the completion of the soup. If unsure, wait and cook the gnocchi after the soup is done. Gnocchi that sits after cooking, tends to stick together. You want to place the freshly cooked gnocchi right into the soup for best results.
- Split Peas: The timing of this soup cooks the split pea down all the way until it melts into the broth creating a thick and rich consistency. If you want keep your split peas somewhat in tact and have some texture, than reduce your cook time accordingly.
- Age of Split Peas: The older the split peas, the longer they take to cook until tender.
Leftovers and Freezing:
Leftovers will generally keep for 4 to 5 days in the refrigerator. Store in a covered container. Reheating can be done on the stovetop, or in the microwave.
This dish can be easily frozen. If frozen, for best results, thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Pantry Products:
- Vegetable Stock: We use Pacific Organic Low Sodium Vegetable Stock. We love this brand because it is Whole Food Plant Based compliant, as it does not contain MSG, has no oil, and does not contain any highly-processed ingredients.
- Tamari: We used San J Tamari Soy Sauce, Gluten Free, Reduced Sodium. You can substitute the tamari with reduced sodium soy sauce, Braggs Liquid Aminos, or Braggs Coconut Liquid Aminos.
Kitchen Products:
- Instant Pot or Ceramic/Enamel Lined Dutch Oven or similarly large stock pot with a tight-fitting lid: 6-quart Round Dutch Oven or 8-quart Duo Instant Pot
We certainly hope you give this deliciousness a try.
If you try this comforting soup, we would love to know if you enjoy it as much as we do! Please leave us a review! Post a picture on Facebook or Instagram and tag us! We would love to hear from you.

Made this prior to another of our Maine snowstorms, was incredible. Excellent flavor too. Used regular sized gnocchi but cut into halves to make them less overpowering in this lovely soup. Used the Instant Pot version since we were outside moving snow. On our regular rotation now! Many thanks. ♥️
Hi there Jenna 🙂

I made this soup last night. Delicious and satisfying. I didn’t have gnocchi so replaced with 1 potato cut into 1/2″ pieces. Can’t wait to try it with gnocchi to get the rich, creaminess of the pasta.
Hi there Marlene 🙂

Can whole dried peas be used instead of the split peas?
If so, would the liquid have to be increased?
For stove top cooking.
Hi there Jane 🙂
Thank you so much for reaching out to us. We apologize for the late response. We do not recommend swapping out split peas with whole dried peas for this recipe.

This looks delicious! I love split pea soup, and make a puréed split pea soup often. Would this soup (Instant Pot version) work well if I substitute diced potatoes for the gnocchi? If so, when would I add the potatoes and would I stir in cooked potatoes afterwards or uncooked/and cook them with the soup? Thank you!
Hi there Eden 🙂 Thank you so much for reaching out to us. We apologize for the late response. We are so glad you are interested in making this soup. We had a reader tell us that she enjoyed this soup with potatoes instead of gnocchi. We recommend adding uncooked potatoes with the rest of the ingredients and cooking it. This way the potatoes cook in all the delicious spices. 12 Minutes is a while for potatoes to be cooking in an instant pot, you will need to make the potatoes larger so they don’t disintegrate. Once cooked, cut them… Read more »
I can’t wait to make this! Can the gnocchi be cooked in the Instant Pot at the same time with the other ingredients? If so, does the pressure time need to be adjusted?
Hi there Marie,
Thank you for your question. We do not recommend cooking the gnocchi in the IP along with the other ingredients.

Ive made this soup twice in the last few weeks, in fact I doubled the recipe this last time so that I could freeze some! It is delicious, and I absolutey love it! It is so rich and flavorful, that I dont miss the ham that I used to use before going plant based. Oh, and a big plus that it is so easy to make! Big winner here!
Hi there Madonna,
