Hi there, Ameera here!
This week’s Whip It Up Wednesday is our delicious Oil Free French Dressing. We are working our way through converting as many dressings as we can to Whole Food Plant Based.
We started developing this dressing early last year and set it aside because we felt it need a few more tweaks.
Those few tiny tweaks made the world of difference. This dressing tastes like the real deal and will knock your socks off with its oh so satisfying rich flavors. We absolutely love it!

Description
This bold, sweet and tangy Oil Free French Dressing is a healthy twist on a classic salad dressing. It’s fast, easy, and perfect for salad lovers! Whole Food Plant Based, vegan, plant based, oil free, refined sugar free, gluten free, no highly processed ingredients.
Ingredients
- 1–3 Tablespoons organic maple syrup (+/-) *
- ½ cup water
- 3 Tablespoons distilled white vinegar
- 1 Tablespoon + 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- 3 Tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon tamari *
- 1 Tablespoon almond butter *
- 1 Tablespoon red onion, chopped
Spice/Herb Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 Tablespoon dried minced onions
- 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
- ½ teaspoon dried ground mustard powder
- Pinch celery seeds (optional)
- ½ teaspoon sea salt (+/-) *
- Pinch black pepper (+/-)
Instructions
- Place all the ingredients into a high-speed blender, blend and emulsify until smooth.
- Taste test the dressing and add more seasonings, if needed.
Notes
*Thickness/Consistency: This is a thick-style dressing, add more water (a little at a time) until you reach your desired consistency.
*Maple Syrup: If you’ve had traditional French dressing, then you are aware that it is a very sweet style dressing. We enjoyed the 3 tablespoons of maple syrup to create that traditional sweet dressing flavor. However, different maple syrups have different sweetness levels. We suggest starting with a smaller amount and increasing until you reach your desired sweetness level.
*Tamari: We used San J Tamari Soy Sauce, Gluten Free, Reduced Sodium. You can substitute the tamari with reduced sodium soy sauce, Braggs Liquid Aminos, or Braggs Coconut Liquid Aminos.
*Almond Butter Substitutes: You can substitute the almond butter with other seed and nut butters with the understanding that the flavors will change accordingly.
*Sea Salt: Please adjust the sea salt based upon your family’s sea salt preferences and/or based upon dietary needs.
*Serving: Makes approximately 1 1/3 cups of dressing.
*Storage: Refrigerate and use within 7 days.

I found this dressing had a bitterness that I wasn’t expecting.
Hi there Karen 🙂
Oh no, we are so sorry to hear that. We have had people make and love this dressing. No one has mentioned a bitterness. We are wondering if you are not familiar with or enjoy the flavor of celery seed, as the celery seed could be a possible reason for the “bitterness.”

This was delicious! I’ve never had traditional French dressing before but this recipe was great on top of a salad with soy curls. I hope you’ll share more dressing recipes, they are delicious!

This is so good. Was concerned it would be too acidic but nope, it turned out perfect. Good balance of savory / sweet / acid with deep flavors and great taste.
(Only used 1T of Maple, for our preferences)
