Ameera here!
Avocados are a “must have” staple in our home. It is rare for us not to have avocados on hand in various stages of “not ripe” to “almost there” to “yippee it’s ripe”. And unfortunately, we have also had the occasional “hey, this avocado was almost ripe yesterday and now it’s rotten!” Those are sad days in our household. I swear you literally have to monitor them a couple times a day or you could miss the passing from unripe to ripe!
Nontraditional Guacamole
We love guacamole! Well, who doesn’t, right? Those beautiful luscious avocado chunks mixed with minced red onion, tomatoes, jalapenos, cilantro with a splash of lime juice, oh my goodness; I am getting hungry just thinking about it. YUMM!
Everyone has a guacamole recipe that is pretty much similar to our recipe, but in varying degrees. However, ours is just a tad bit nontraditional, and for the guacamole purists, they would probably wrinkle their nose at our recipe. But we don’t care, because it is soooo good.
I am sure others have thought of this, but we had not arrived at this variation as it came to us by accident. One day we simply ran out of tomatoes, so we decided to replace the tomatoes with our favorite salsa. And, let me tell you – ohhhh baby, it was so gosh darn delicious! We have been making it this way ever since.
Pretty Guacamole
Our nontraditional guacamole isn’t as pretty as traditional guacamole simply because the salsa tends to coat the avocadoes, which turns it this “not so pretty” color. So be aware if you try this recipe, your guacamole is gonna taste AH-MAZING, but it isn’t going to look as pretty as traditional guacamole!
If you want it to stay the beautiful green color, substitute the salsa for tomatoes, and you’ll be good to go!
Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo will be here shortly. We plan to make this nontraditional guacamole for Cinco de Mayo, but to be honest, pretty much every week there’s guacamole in our house because we make this recipe so often. It is so delicious, and full of healthy fats that are good for you.
Avocadoes are a great source of vitamins C, E, K and B-6. They have riboflavin, niacin, folate, magnesium and potassium as well as lutein, and beta-carotene.
What are your plans for Cinco de Mayo this year?
Hi! Robin here.
As Monkey said “We are an avocado family!” They are so good. We love this guacamole recipe. We actually have to make it two ways. Monkey and I both LOVE cilantro, but TP109 absolutely hates it. We have to make one guacamole recipe with cilantro and one without it. TP109 says cilantro tastes like soap. I get that there is a certain segment of the population whose taste buds are not geared to loving cilantro; he is definitely one of them. Anytime we make guacamole (which is often), he is quick to remind us to make his without cilantro.

Guacamole?
I will never forget this! Many years ago, before TP109 could fully appreciate guacamole or even understand what it was; one late night, he got hungry and he found some guacamole in the fridge and microwaved it. He thought it was a dish that was supposed to be served warm. LOL The next morning, he ranted about how utterly disgusting the “green goop” was. I was like “Green goop? You mean the guacamole? Why do you say that? It is delicious!” He said “I heated it up in the microwave and tried to eat it and it was awful.” Oh geez! I am not sure how tasty hot guacamole would be, but also knowing how much he hated cilantro, I am sure it wasn’t too appetizing. It took years before he would try it again. Now, he loves it – without cilantro of course!
Do you love or hate cilantro?

Description
This AH-MAZING Guacamole is packed with lip-smacking ingredients, and of course, our favorite star ingredient, the avocado! It’s SO fast and easy with incredible flavor, creamy texture, and mind-blowing taste. You’ll be doing your happy dance! Whole Food Plant Based recipe, vegan, no oil, no refined sugar, no highly processed ingredients, and gluten free.
Ingredients
- 4 avocadoes, diced into 1-inch pieces
- 3 – 4 Tablespoons red onion, finely minced
- ½ cup salsa (or ½ cup tomatoes, seeded and chopped)
- 2 – 3 Tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped
- 1 jalapeno pepper, finely minced
- 1 lime, juiced (about ¼ cup)
- Pinch sea salt (+/-)
- Pinch black pepper (+/-)
Optional Toppings:
- Tomatoes, seeded and finely diced
- Red onions, finely diced
- Jalapeno rings, finely sliced and seeded
- Sprinkle of lime zest
- Cilantro, rough chop
Instructions
- Prep all your veggies, saving the avocadoes for last. Avocadoes tend to brown quickly once they are cut open.
- Place all the ingredients listed above into a large bowl, except the avocadoes and lime juice.
- Then proceed to work with one avocado at a time. Take the avocado and slice it in half from top to bottom, carefully remove the pit. Then slice the avocado in inch slices from top to bottom, while still inside the avocado skin. Slice right up to the skin, but do not pierce it. Then slice the avocado from side to side, while still in the avocado skin. Slice right up to the skin, but do not pierce it. Then take a large thin edged spoon and starting on the side of the avocado, carefully pop out the sliced avocado chunks into a large bowl. Sprinkle with a tiny bit of the ¼ cup lime juice. Then repeat this same process for the remaining 3 avocadoes. If any remaining lime juice is left, add over top of the avocadoes.
- Mix well. If you prefer less texture, mash the avocadoes. If you prefer a lot of texture, leave the avocadoes in chunks.
- Please note that the salsa tends to color the avocadoes. It takes amazing, but if you prefer more green color, then use diced tomatoes rather than salsa.
- Place the guacamole in an appropriate sized bowl and sprinkle with the Optional Toppings, if desired. It dresses it up nicely.
