Tips for Success:
- Flavor Profile: These Easy Smashed Falafel Tacos are bursting with delicious Middle Eastern falafel flavors. If you love falafel, then you will love these easy-to-make, smashed falafel tacos.
- Oven Option: If you prefer to heat them in the oven so that they are all done at the same time, then simply preheat the oven to 400 F. Lay the folded taco onto a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 15 to 20 minutes until hot, flipping once half-way through. The heating methods for this recipe is very forgiving, either stovetop or oven.
- Spices: The beauty of this recipe is that you can taste the falafel mixture while you are making it to gauge if you want additional spices to suit your own personal preferences.
- Flour Tortillas: Feel free to use your favorite flour tortilla recipe or store brand. Here is a link to our Oil-Free Flour Tortillas
- Pickled Turnips: Pickled turnips are very common in the Lebanese (Middle Eastern) cuisine. They tend to be an acquired taste. We absolutely love them. They are completely optional. Here is a link to our Refrigerator Middle Eastern Pickled Turnips
- Toum Sauce (Garlic Sauce): Toum sauce (garlic sauce) is a very common condiment in the Lebanese (Middle Eastern) cuisine. We love our Oil-Free Garlic Sauce (Toum) Feel free to use your favorite recipe or store brand.
- Sea Salt: Please adjust the sea salt based upon your family’s sea salt preferences and/or based upon dietary needs.
- Table Salt: If using table salt, you should use less table salt than the amount listed in the ingredients as sea salt crystals are larger than table salt crystals. Since table salt crystals are very fine, less table salt is required to season a dish. We would suggest starting with about 1/4 to 1/2 the amount of sea salt listed. You can always add more salt but cannot take it away. We recommend using sea salt as it is less refined than table salt.
Leftovers and Freezing:
Leftovers will generally keep 4 to 5 days in the refrigerator. Store in a covered air-tight container.
This tacos freeze well.
Pantry Products:
- Tahini: We used Ziyad Premium Tahini (Sesame Paste). Feel free to use your favorite brand of tahini.
- Sea Salt: Please adjust the sea salt based upon your family’s sea salt preferences and/or based upon dietary needs.
Kitchen Equipment:
- Large skillet (or large baking sheet if baking in the oven)

Description
These Easy Smashed Falafel Tacos are a crave-worthy celebration of Middle Eastern flavors, brilliantly combining flavorful falafel with soft tortillas for a taco-night fusion experience you’ll crave again and again.
Ingredients
Base Ingredients:
- 2 – [ 15.25 oz. cans ] chickpeas, drained, rinsed
- ½ cup packed fresh parsley, stems removed
- ½ cup packed fresh cilantro, stems removed
- 2 Tablespoons tahini
- 1 Tablespoon nutritional yeast
- 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 Tablespoon water (+/-)
Spice/Herb Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin (+/-) *
- ½ teaspoon ground coriander (+/-) *
- Pinch to 1 teaspoon sea salt (+/-) *
- Pinch cayenne pepper (+/-) *Â
Other Ingredients:
- 8 [ 6-inch ] flour tortillas *
Optional Toppings:
- Oil-Free Garlic Sauce (Toum)
- Fresh tomatoes, seeded, small dice
- Pickled turnips
Instructions
- Place all the Base Ingredients and Spice/Herb Ingredients into a food processor and process until thoroughly mixed and the chickpeas are broken down into a paste-like mixture. Do not over process.Â
- Take a flour tortilla and lay it on a flat surface. Scoop up 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup (largely dependent upon the size of tortilla used) of the falafel mixture and form a smooth ball, then lay it onto on half of the flour tortilla and press the mixture to the edges of half of the tortilla, then fold over in half, slightly press together to seal. Repeat until all the tortillas are filled and folded.
- Place a large skillet onto the stove over medium heat, then lay several of the folded tortillas down onto the hot skillet. Heat until the tortillas are golden brown and the inside filling is hot (approx. 3 to 4 minutes), then gently flip over to the other side. Heat until the other side is golden brown (approx. 2 to 3 minutes). Remove and place on a plate. Continue until all the folded tortillas have been browned in the skillet on both sides.
- To serve, eat plain or stuffed with chopped tomatoes and garlic sauce. Add some pickled turnips for the adventurous!
