Say whaaaaat, you don’t eat meat? How in the world are you alive? Where do you get your protein?
So, where will I get my protein on a Whole Food Plant Based diet?
I am so glad you asked as there are many misconceptions that protein cannot be obtained from plants.
American advertising at its finest. It has been drilled into us that protein must be obtained primarily from animals and animal products. When Chris became a vegetarian, I was super worried that he would not get enough protein. When I think about that now, I realize how incredibly silly that was. But like millions of Americans, we have been told that meat is where you get your protein and you need protein to survive.
It is true protein is very important! Your body needs protein to build and repair tissues, and protein is a building block for bones, muscles, skin and blood. We need protein. We should eat a healthy diet rich in protein; however, did you know that there are plants that are rich in protein?
Where do muscular animals (cows, guerillas, horses, etc.) get their protein? They get protein from plants!
To be honest, I never thought much about how the animals we eat (beef, poultry, etc.) get their protein. It wasn’t until it was pointed out to me that they get their protein from plants. That fact alone is clearly the best response when asked by anyone (omnivores) who want to know where you get your protein. Response: “Where does your meat (beef, poultry, etc.) get its protein?” FROM PLANTS!!! Mind = blown
The list below outlines some excellent sources of protein available from plants. Keep in mind there are lots of other plant-protein options not listed; these are some examples to help you get started 😉
From what I understand, plants also contain amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. Our bodies use this to make protein from plants. Our bodies are amazing!
Hi there Jenn 🙂
Couldn’t agree more, our bodies are amazing <3
