Hi there, Ameera here!
Is it Tuesday yet? It doesn’t have to be Taco Tuesday to enjoy these ah-mazing Spicy Moroccan tacos. We are a taco loving family, so when I told Mom I wanted to make Moroccan tacos, she said “Where do I sign up?”
She was all about it because she absolutely loves the Moroccan cuisine, and so do I! The Moroccan flavors are brimming with earthy, zesty, smoky, and spicy goodness that’s hard not to fall in love with.
Tacos and Toum (Garlic Sauce)
Toum, also known as Middle Eastern garlic sauce, is the perfect accompaniment to these yummy tacos. I adore toum sauce; it’s a garlic lovers’ dream – just so darned delicious. I can’t get enough of it. Michael LOVES toum and puts it on just about anything and everything.
Toum sauce is basically a type of mayonnaise (for lack of a better word) with garlic infused in it. It works like a tasty cooling and vibrant sauce for Middle Eastern foods.
We are using this toum sauce like sour cream is used on Mexican food. While these tacos don’t carry that much heat, they do have spices galore. If you love your food with a POW of heat, you can totally ramp it up if you wish by adding more cayenne pepper, mmmMMmm.

I’ll let Mom tell you more! 😛
Hi! Robin here!
I LOVE these tacos! But then again, I would simply because I love Moroccan food. I can’t get enough of its deliciousness. I love how the sweetness of the raisins and apricots play off the bold spices. Then top it all off with a garlic sauce that is pure bliss. It just makes for the perfect pairing.
We hope you give this recipe a try, you won’t be sorry!

- 1 Tablespoon dried minced onion flakes
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon sweet paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- Pinch coriander
- 1/8 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (+/-)
- ½ teaspoon sea salt (+/-) *
- Pinch black pepper
Other Ingredients:
- Taco shells/tortillas
- 1 recipe of Healthy Garlic Sauce
- Chopped cilantro
- Sliced jalapenos
- Finely diced red onions
Healthy Garlic Sauce Ingredients:
- ½ cup unsweetened plain plant yogurt
- 2 teaspoons tahini
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- ¼ teaspoon sea salt (+/- to taste)
- Pinch of freshly ground pepper (+/- to taste)
Instructions
- Make the Healthy Garlic Sauce. Set aside. *
- Place the Herb/Spice Ingredients in a small bowl, mix and set aside.
- Take one can of the chickpeas, rinse and drain, then mash them, set aside.
- In a large ceramic/enamel-lined large skillet, add the finely diced red onion, red bell pepper, jalapeno pepper, and grated sweet potato; sauté over medium heat until they begin to soften, approximately 7 to 10 minutes. Add a tablespoon or so of water if the veggies start to stick and/or to prevent burning.
- Add the minced garlic, ginger and tomato paste, and sauté for one minute, stirring constantly, add the Herb/Spice mix and sauté, stirring constantly to release their fragrance, about one minute. Then add all the other the remaining Skillet Ingredients (including the mashed and whole chickpeas), bring the mixture to a boil, then immediately lower to a simmer. Stir well to incorporate all the ingredients. Cook uncovered over low heat for 8 minutes, stirring occasionally. The mixture is thick, but not dry.
- Test the flavors, add more spices, if necessary, to achieve the level of flavor you desire. Serve in your favorite taco/tortilla shell topped with the Healthy Garlic Sauce and freshly chopped cilantro, diced red onions, and sliced jalapeño peppers.
Notes
*Tomatoes: We used a cup from a 14.5 oz. can of petite diced tomatoes, drained off the liquid, then measured after the liquid had been drained. Once all the liquid has been drained, you should have one cup of tomatoes from the 14.5 oz. can.
*Tamari: We used San J Tamari Soy Sauce, Gluten Free, Reduced Sodium. You can substitute the tamari with reduced sodium soy sauce, Braggs Liquid Aminos, or Braggs Coconut Liquid Aminos.
*Healthy Garlic Sauce: Place all the Healthy Garlic Sauce ingredients into a small bowl, mix well and refrigerate.
*Golden Raisins: If you can’t find golden raisins, you can also use regular raisins.
*Sea Salt: Please adjust the sea salt based upon your family’s sea salt preferences and/or based upon dietary needs.
*Serving: Makes 12 tacos
*Storage: Refrigerate and use within 5 days.

Have you tried making the garlic sauce by blending the yogurt and fresh garlic? 😃 the toum I’ve had has a bite that I think comes from fresh garlic!
Hi there Lauren 🙂
Thank you so much for reaching out to us. We have tried both fresh garlic and garlic powder. We totally get the bite that comes from fresh garlic. We have family members that prefer fresh garlic; however, for this recipe, we wanted to tone down the bite and used garlic powder instead. Feel free to use fresh garlic if you prefer that little bite that comes from fresh garlic.
-Ameera and Robin 🙂
